The Church

Part One

სვეტიცხოველი

Mtskheta. Twenty minutes from Tbilisi if we are lucky - most likely an hour and a half in traffic. The most sacred cathedral in Georgia.

The Cathedral

Georgia was Christianised in 337 AD. Svetitskhoveli is where it happened. The burial site of Christ's robe, according to Georgian Orthodox tradition. Fourteen centuries of prayer inside these walls.

The current building is from the 11th century. The architect was Arsukidze. When he finished it, his hand was cut off - so he could never build anything as beautiful again. There is a carving of a hand on the cathedral wall. It has been there ever since.

What to Wear

Whatever you are wearing for the wedding is good. The only thing you would need in addition is a headscarf. Bring yours or borrow one from the entrance.
